Mulch stops at the stem

Mulch stops at the stem. What is in front of you is mulch on a bed of flowers.

Do it in order

Handle it this way: lay mulch so it does not touch the crown. Wash the tool when you move to the next plant.

The usual miss

People lose cuttings and seedlings to mulch piled against the stem. Slow down there.

Finished means you can see the crown. If you are guessing, water less than you want to and look again tomorrow.

This sits in "Soil and water", written as a garden note rather than a catalog.

A garden note, not a promise that a plant will thrive. Look again in a week.
