Condition woody stems. What is in front of you is a woody stem such as lilac.

Do it in order

Handle it this way: split or crush the end and give it a long drink before arranging. Wash the tool when you move to the next plant.

The usual miss

People lose cuttings and seedlings to a woody stem put straight into a shallow vase. Slow down there.

Finished means the woody stem has had a deep drink. If you are guessing, water less than you want to and look again tomorrow.

This sits in "Cutting and vases", written as a garden note rather than a catalog.

A garden note, not a promise that a plant will thrive. Look again in a week.
