Strip the leaves that would sit underwater. What is in front of you is leaves below the water line.

Do it in order

Handle it this way: strip those leaves before the stems go in the vase. Wash the tool when you move to the next plant.

The usual miss

People lose cuttings and seedlings to a vase of underwater leaves. Slow down there.

Finished means no leaf is under the water. If you are guessing, water less than you want to and look again tomorrow.

This sits in "Cutting and vases", written as a garden note rather than a catalog.

A garden note, not a promise that a plant will thrive. Look again in a week.
